A Cup Holder

Detachable cup

Scooters are used for a lot of things for example travelling, but say your  going to the dairy to get a drink, but you can’t hold the drink while riding the scooter or you will probably drop the drink,, instead of just holding the drink you can use a detachable cup holder as the drink won’t Spill. There are a two clips that attaches onto the handlebars of the scooter, any scooter will work with two long sticks on either side of the clips and they attaches onto a cup holder ( which is where you put the cup). The cup holder will be very sturdy.

Plastic Shredder Prototype

A plastic shredder is a machine used to cut plastic into smaller pieces for granulation. The shredders are designed specifically for all plastic waste, like car bumpers, pipes, plastic straws and plastic cups. In the process, large plastic items are fed into the shredder.This is how plastic breaks down.

Underwater Speaker Prototype!

Our prototype is an underwater speaker that would sit on the bottom of fishing boats. The speaker would play loud Orca/killer whale sounds to scare away dolphins, sharks, whales and sea turtles from big fishing nets. This is a major problem for all sea creatures and if we don’t change now we may have no more sea life left.

Did you know recent studies show that more than 87,000 sharks, 3,400 dolphins and 1,100 sea lions over the past 25 years have died due to fishing nets. The nets are also estimated to have killed more than 380 whales and 100 sea turtles! WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING NOW!

Our invention is an underwater speaker that plays loud Orca\killer whale sounds to scare away sharks, dolphins and a few more sea creatures. The speaker would sit under large fishing boats and play the sounds, The sound will not affect the fish as much as it will other sea creatures as they can’t exactly hear noises, as of this, the fish number caught should still be the same. Who would want to kill a graceful dolphin?

Sensible clothing for biking

• Hiviz (high visibility) or bright clothing so that you can be seen
• Carrying a backpack - use a hiviz backpack cover
• Helmet
• Well-fitted closed-in shoes - make sure your laces are tied and secured by

tucking into your shoes

• Baggy pants - tuck into your socks (skinny jeans can chaff)
• ‘Spring roll’ your jacket around your waist if you get too hot
• Shorts are ideal or a skirt

Bike Safety Check

Good check every month or two

Daily check before you ride every time

1. Brake checks: two working brakes
1. Push the bike forwards and apply front brake to check
2. Push the bike backwards and apply the back brake to check
2. Properly inflated tyres -
1. flat hand press on the tyre - if it goes down, you need to pump it up
2. Squeeze - if they are soft, you need to pump it up
3. Check that you wheel is attached securely
1. check the quick release lever (open on one side and closed on the other)
2. secure in line with the frame and the fork. If the wheel wobbles, it is too loose.

Legal requirements: to ride a bike on New Zealand roads

• Reflectors - red rear reflectors (rear chain stay or on the back of the seat)
• Nighttime riding - lights instead of reflectors; back light red); front light white Tyre - flashing makes them more visible

• Brakes - must have two working brakes to ride on the NZ roads (front - right and back - left) (ride with two fingers on the brake so that you have fast

reaction to braking)

Gears

Two different shifts

1. One for the front cogs (Left hand shifter - not used as often - middle one just right)
2. One for the back cogs (1-7 cogs); (Right hand shifter - use them all the time 5

E.g. 1-1 very steep hill

Golden road - you must be pedaling when you change gears - the chain moves when you are
pedaling. You can break the bike if you change gears without pedaling.

One click at a time (one gear at a time)

Pedal ready position

• Left foot on the ground and right foot in the air
• Opposite side of the chain
• Footpath side
• Off the road and the road is visible

Mounting the Bike

• Hands on the handles - on the brakes
• Tip the bike towards you and step over the bike
• RIght foot up high (you will be pushing off with your right foot)

Helmets

It is a legal requirement to wear a helmet when riding your bike on a New Zealand road

Head injuries can be permanent - we must protect our brain

Scooter helmets or other helmets should not be worn when riding a bike - wear a helmet
that is especially designed for biking

Labels inside the helmet will tell you if it is a bike is a helmet - it lets you know what your
helmet is made off.

Do not drop them on the floor or ground - that is the way MOST helmets are broken

Plastic coating is designed for sliding along the ground if we come off our bike

The styrofoam inner should be intact - no cracks (put pressure on the interior of the helmet
with your hands to check for cracks - if you see any cracks, you should buy a new one)

Cut the straps and throw it away - don’t be tempted to use a broken helmet

Checking to see if they fit well:

When we ride our bikes, it is very important to wear a helmet that fits correctly.

• Two fingers above our eyebrow - this is where our helmet should be positioned
• Y on the side of the ear - looping underneath the ears
• Tightened under your chin - lean forward to make sure your helmet is not ‘floppy’

Large Art for Nature

Room 7 has been learning about patterns and Art. So we had to colour in a piece of paper with pastels. We had lots of fun colouring them in. Every piece is a piece of puzzle so that we made amazing The turtle and The Lion. 

Firstly Mrs Swan asked us if we wanted the lion or the turtle then she gave us a paper to colour, but we weren't allowed to have the same colour or more in a row.  Some people got more than one piece at a time, because each piece they received only has very small amounts of colouring to do. In conclusion, we succeeded and we all loved it. Mrs Swan was incredibly happy.

Thread Lightly Caravan

The Tread Lightly Caravan is a mobile exhibition/classroom established by the Urban Ecoliving Charitable Trust to inspire Room 7 to live more sustainably.

Using interactive displays, the Caravan shows visitors how everyday choices such as what we buy, how we travel, what we eat, how we use energy in our homes and how we manage waste, can impact the natural environment. The key message to visitors is, 'Your choices have environmental consequences'. 

The key communication messages are:

1. Our actions and choices have an effect on our environment.
2. If we continue to use resources (water, materials, energy) as we do now, we will run out.
3. Small changes in the way we live will help save resources, prevent pollution and protect our plants, animals and their habitats.

The Tread Lightly Caravan teaches students to communicate and champion sustainability to their families and communities in order to educate them and encourage better practice.

ARTS WEEK

Last week, it was week 7 and…. ARTS WEEK! In week 7 we did multiple

things that got to do with art. This included, Dance, Drama, Music and

Visual Arts. We had an art rotation where the year 6 teachers covered an

area of art and each class would do fun activities with that specific teacher.

Mrs Swan and Mrs Cometti did Dance whilst Mr Mac and Mrs Lewis

covered Drama. Each teacher did different activities with us, children.

Mrs Swan did Sport related 8 beat dances, by making sport actions into

dance movements.

Mrs Cometti taught how to make a verb/noun into a dance movement.

She also taught us not to touch other people whilst dancing. We learned

this by playing a fun game called ‘City Square.’

With Mr Mac we played Family Portraits and made short plays to share

with the class.

Mrs Lewis’s activities included, how to act like an object, A fun short

little red riding hood play and making funny advertisements and

performing them in front of the class.

And to make it even better, on Friday we had mufti day. We could dress up

as anyone who had something to do with art. People dressed up as the

Mona Lisa, Painters, Mimes, Dancers, Fashion Designers and more!

Mrs Swan dressed up as her favourite singer named Madonna.

Overall, Room 7 absolutely enjoyed arts week. We can’t wait for the

art exhibition coming up! We will be presenting…. Wonderful Wired Critters………………

Sign Language

                          Sign Language

In Room 7 this week we are learning to learn sign language.  It is an exciting and new subject. Most of us have learned how to spell our names in sign language. We have also learned how to spell thing like, ‘good morning,’ ‘girl’ and ‘boy.’ We wonder how deaf people learnt it. Our teacher makes it look so easy to do, but in actual fact it’s very difficult! It makes us feel very lucky because we can hear. Here are the letters of sign language:

~ Term 1 Art in Room 7 ~

Term 1 is nearly coming to an end and Room 7 has created such phenomenal masterpieces. This includes, our Picasso Self portraits, Chinese Dragons and Taniwha work and we’ve just started our latest masterpiece on Mixed Media by Don Binney. (And we’re not talking about social media we are talking about art, using different materials)

First we created our Picasso self Portraits. You might think they look a bit crazy, but that's because they're supposed to, because there inspired by Picasso portraits. First we drew our faces in pencil and went over in black paint, then we coloured in our faces in colorful paints, then we did the background, and for full potential we used pastel to make it look sharper and give the portraits detail.

Earlier in the term, Chinese new year commenced, so in our class we talked about important symbols in Chinese culture. We came across the Chinese dragon and we thought this was pretty similar to the Taniwha, so we did some research and recorded our information on a Venn diagram. Then we created some art. First we sketched in our sketching books and drew them on a white piece of paper. Then we used dye to give it some colour. Finally we gently ripped the paper to give a cool effect.

And now we are starting on our Mixed Media. In this artwork we need to include, a native bird/animal, a native plant, a NZ Landscape  and a NZ icon. We will incorporate, charcoal, water colour, pastel and collaging. We can’t wait for it to be finished!

Adventures of Room 7

Welcome to the wonderful Room 7, where everything is fun and exciting! Oh, don’t worry parents we still do lots of learning! So for the past 6 weeks we have done lots of action packed activities. There’s been Yr 6 camp and the Year 5’s have been to EOTC. The Yr 6’s have had so much fun at Lakewood Lodge which was down at Huntly. We did some horse games, archery, Survival, the flying fox, climbing wall, kayaking, an intense game of tug of war, the mud run, there was literally tadpoles swimming in the murky water and much more! Some of us face our fears but we all had such a great time… and so did the Year 5’s! The Year 5’s had a great time at Eastern Beach. They did some kayaking and there was a lot of crashing waves! They made bubbling pikelets, fun paddling games, awesome raft building, tent pitching and…..(drum roll please) a scavenger hunt!  Tree adventures, they had lots of courses where they each had to wear harnesses and helmets. The obstacles were made out of wood, metals and rope. They had ziplines and other fun stuff too! They had to also had played Frisbee Golf which is kind of like mini golf but we use a frisbee instead. But most importantly, we all survived…. Well most of them…

But we had just as fun at school we have created some awesome Picasso Paintings we used pastel and paint and they turned out amazing! We are reading the book, ‘Wonder’ and are learning about how each of us are unique. We have also created this artwork which shows our personality. We have sooo much more adventures to tell but we don’t have enough time. Until next time!
