Merry Christmas to you all

Room 7, it has been an awesome year teaching you all. You are a crazy bunch at times,

but also very thoughtful, caring, clever and full of personality.

I want to say a big thank you to you all for your hard work (and parents) for your support
over the year. I have been overwhelmed by the amount of lovely gifts received over the
last few days. . 

Good luck for year 6, and have heaps of fun being the leaders of the school. Work hard
and try your best, and make the most of every experience. And Good luck year 7, and I
would like to wish you all the best for the future and your time at Intermediate next year.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, be safe, wear sunscreen, and have lots of fun.
I'll see you all at the start of the year, and look forward to hearing about your holiday
adventures.

Sunnyhills Athletics Day 2018

   

On Monday 5th of November, the whole Kauri Whanau school participated in games and athletics activities. It was a windy day but we had a really fun day!

Sunnyhills Colour Run!

The teachers had a fantastic time getting bombed by all of the students present at the colour run!

We did a run with obstacles, had food trucks, photographers, dance parties, lively music, bubble machines, and hoses out and went crazy bombing each other with colour!

What a day!

Large Art for Nature

Large Art for Nature

Room 7 has been learning about patterns and Art. So we had to colour in a piece of paper with pastels. We had lots of fun colouring them in. Every piece is a piece of puzzle so that we made amazing The turtle and The Lion. 

Firstly Mrs Swan asked us if we wanted the lion or the turtle then she gave us a paper to colour, but we weren't allowed to have the same colour or more in a row.  Some people got more than one piece at a time, because each piece they received only has very small amounts of colouring to do. In conclusion, we succeeded and we all loved it. Mrs Swan was incredibly happy.

Thread Lightly Caravan

The Tread Lightly Caravan is a mobile exhibition/classroom established by the Urban Ecoliving Charitable Trust to inspire Room 7 to live more sustainably.

Using interactive displays, the Caravan shows visitors how everyday choices such as what we buy, how we travel, what we eat, how we use energy in our homes and how we manage waste, can impact the natural environment. The key message to visitors is, 'Your choices have environmental consequences'. 

The key communication messages are:

1. Our actions and choices have an effect on our environment.
2. If we continue to use resources (water, materials, energy) as we do now, we will run out.
3. Small changes in the way we live will help save resources, prevent pollution and protect our plants, animals and their habitats.

The Tread Lightly Caravan teaches students to communicate and champion sustainability to their families and communities in order to educate them and encourage better practice.

25th June 2018 Dear Parents/Caregivers

The Tread Lightly Caravan (TLC) has been booked to visit us over two weeks in Term 3,
Wednesday 25th July to Wednesday 1st August. The Tread Lightly Caravan (TLC) is
Auckland’s only mobile environmental classroom that visits primary and intermediate
schools in the Auckland region. The TLC shows students how everyday choices
(what we buy, how we travel, what we eat, how we use energy in our homes) can make
a huge difference to our natural environment. The TLC is filled with fun and interactive
displays and exhibits, designed to graphically demonstrate the environmental consequences
of our everyday lifestyle choices. Since the TLC became operational in December 2010,
the caravan has visited over 130 schools and more than 23,000 school children have
experienced the TLC programme All students will participate in a session, facilitated by
our qualified teacher and assistant, participating in different interactive and hands-on
activities in the Caravan. The Tread Lightly Caravan is proudly supported in 2018 by
Foundation North, with added support from Auckland Council Local Boards, Asaleo Care,
Packaging Forum, Auckland Airport and Lion Foundation, Auckland Towing and Benefitz.

To allow this student learning to take place, we require five parent helpers for each
room to be assistants on the activity stations during the time that classes are there.
You will be given full instruction on the day by the lead teacher.

teacher. The cost of the visit is $5.00 per child. This has been added to your child/
children’s KINDO account. Thank you to those families that have already gone onto their
account and paid for this in advance. To check that you have made a payment, you go onto
your Kindo account and under ‘Orders’ it lists all that you have paid for, also if it doesn’t
appear on your account you can assume that you have already paid.

ARTS WEEK

Last week, it was week 7 and…. ARTS WEEK! In week 7 we did multiple

things that got to do with art. This included, Dance, Drama, Music and

Visual Arts. We had an art rotation where the year 6 teachers covered an

area of art and each class would do fun activities with that specific teacher.

Mrs Swan and Mrs Cometti did Dance whilst Mr Mac and Mrs Lewis

covered Drama. Each teacher did different activities with us, children.

Mrs Swan did Sport related 8 beat dances, by making sport actions into

dance movements.

Mrs Cometti taught how to make a verb/noun into a dance movement.

She also taught us not to touch other people whilst dancing. We learned

this by playing a fun game called ‘City Square.’

With Mr Mac we played Family Portraits and made short plays to share

with the class.

Mrs Lewis’s activities included, how to act like an object, A fun short

little red riding hood play and making funny advertisements and

performing them in front of the class.

And to make it even better, on Friday we had mufti day. We could dress up

as anyone who had something to do with art. People dressed up as the

Mona Lisa, Painters, Mimes, Dancers, Fashion Designers and more!

Mrs Swan dressed up as her favourite singer named Madonna.

Overall, Room 7 absolutely enjoyed arts week. We can’t wait for the

art exhibition coming up! We will be presenting…. Wonderful Wired Critters………………

Buddhist Temple

Room 7 went off with the

year 5’s and 6’s to

the Buddhist temple,

here’s what happened:

Firstly we  were placed into four separate

groups, 1, 2, 3 and 4. We were introduced to

the temple’s people and staff, then we went to

the wishing bell and learnt how to make a wish

with it. There was a long line to have your wish,

but it wasn’t too long of a wait.

                                                      

Secondly we huddled inside a small room.

Then the staff taught us how to hold an ink brush

and gave us a piece of paper with chinese

characters to trace over. It was a really hard grip.

Most children struggled, some of us just gave up.

After we were finished we picked up our papers

and headed to our next activity.

We walked over to another part of the temple,

before we entered we had each been each given

a flower to put in a little area with all the other flowers.

We scurried into the room and watched a video about

a prince riding on a white horse. We then wrote a wish

on a  piece of paper which was shaped as a leaf,

cloud or flower. We then each got a pin and stuck it

onto the wall.

After we were all outside in a group we learnt how to

bath the buddha. Firstly we poured water over the

right shoulder, then the left. Finally the back,

whilst doing so we were saying the 3gs and 4gs.

After we walked up a few steps and had a small break.

We each got biscuits and small cup of water to

wash it down. While we were enjoying our food

we got a tattoo which said one of the 3gs  4gs in

action

Once we had finished we scrambled inside

a few policemen came to talk to us. We got to

ask questions about what they carried around with

them on the job. One of the kids asked if they could

get handcuffed and the police replied with, “alright.”

After he got handcuffed we had to exit. It was sad to

leave but we all had a great time, we each got a horse

charm to remember the special moments we had there.

Chocolate Chips Cookies

Making Chocolate chip Cookies

Today we made chocolate chip cookies.

First we preheated the oven to 180 degrees .

Then we laied down some baking paper on the oven tray.

Third we poured the cookie mixture in a big bowl.

Afterwards we scooped a third of a cup of butter and

dropped it in the bowl.

First we cracked a giant egg and mixed it all

together with no water or milk.

When it was all gooey and smooth,

Mrs V(our helper) then mixed the mixture

with her hands.

After we just took a lump if the cooking batter

a rolled it into a ball and dropped it onto the oven tray.

Then very carefully Mrs V slid it into the heated oven.

We baked it for about 15-20 minutes then

took it out to look at it.

Each of us quickly took a big bite out of it to see

what it tasted like. It was so delicious.

Some of us thought it tasted a bit like cereal.

The finished product was so good that

everyone in our class loved it.

Sign Language

                          Sign Language

In Room 7 this week we are learning to learn sign language.  It is an exciting and new subject. Most of us have learned how to spell our names in sign language. We have also learned how to spell thing like, ‘good morning,’ ‘girl’ and ‘boy.’ We wonder how deaf people learnt it. Our teacher makes it look so easy to do, but in actual fact it’s very difficult! It makes us feel very lucky because we can hear. Here are the letters of sign language:

Adventures of Room 7

Welcome to the wonderful Room 7, where everything is fun and exciting! Oh, don’t worry parents we still do lots of learning! So for the past 6 weeks we have done lots of action packed activities. There’s been Yr 6 camp and the Year 5’s have been to EOTC. The Yr 6’s have had so much fun at Lakewood Lodge which was down at Huntly. We did some horse games, archery, Survival, the flying fox, climbing wall, kayaking, an intense game of tug of war, the mud run, there was literally tadpoles swimming in the murky water and much more! Some of us face our fears but we all had such a great time… and so did the Year 5’s! The Year 5’s had a great time at Eastern Beach. They did some kayaking and there was a lot of crashing waves! They made bubbling pikelets, fun paddling games, awesome raft building, tent pitching and…..(drum roll please) a scavenger hunt!  Tree adventures, they had lots of courses where they each had to wear harnesses and helmets. The obstacles were made out of wood, metals and rope. They had ziplines and other fun stuff too! They had to also had played Frisbee Golf which is kind of like mini golf but we use a frisbee instead. But most importantly, we all survived…. Well most of them…

But we had just as fun at school we have created some awesome Picasso Paintings we used pastel and paint and they turned out amazing! We are reading the book, ‘Wonder’ and are learning about how each of us are unique. We have also created this artwork which shows our personality. We have sooo much more adventures to tell but we don’t have enough time. Until next time!
